After winning a gold medal in swimming during the 1996 Olympic Games, Sheila Taormina has moved into the world of triathlons. While she has trained for only two years in the sport, she surprised everyone, including herself, by winning the United States triathlon trials and earning a spot on the Olympic team. Watch for her in Sydney! >>> Sheila says that God plays a part in her athletics because He is such a huge part of her identity. “When you become a Christian, God’s in your heart. I love what I do so much, and I know it’s a gift. It’s not something I worked so hard to get as much as God just said, ‘I’m going to use you to make a difference here.’ ” >>> When the going gets tough during the 1-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike race, and 6.2-mile run of a triathlon, Sheila gains strength from Zechariah 4:6—“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.” |
