Olympic swimmer Josh Davis never expected to win three gold medals at his first Olympic Games in 1996. He didnt expect to be named captain of the swim team when he returned to the Olympics in 2000. He certainly never expected to be competing in his third Olympics in 2004. * The one expectation Josh did have was that his life would always be defined by who he is in Christ, not the number of medals around his neck. Josh describes himself as a Christian, who happens to be a professional athlete. This is evident in the way Josh has prioritized his life so that his relationship with Christ comes first, his relationships with his wife and children are next, followed, finally, by training and competition. Keeping these priorities is not always easy, especially with the pressures of Olympic competition. Josh says, There were nights when I would wrestle in my mind about how I could get faster, stronger and leaner. It was in those moments that God would remind me that what Im doing is nothing more than a means to an end. * Josh began swimming at age twelve and had a natural talent for the sport. He was determined to become the fastest in the sport and joined the University of Texas swim team after high school. In 1996 Josh competed in his first Olympics and shocked the world as he and the U.S. relay team won three Gold medals. Josh dramatically improved his finish in the individual 200m freestyle at the 2000 Olympic games. Now, as he trains for Athens, his goal is to be the fastest swimmer in the world. But regardless of what happens in the race, Josh knows the real reason he competes is to glorify God.
